As soon as the car made it to my driveway, it was time to start tearing it apart to see just how big the project was going to be. Rust was going to be the enemy, so internal and external trims were carefully removed. Luckily, no nasty structural rust had started, although another year in the weather would have most likely have been enough to make the car expensive to repair.
Dash pad, instrument binnacle and wiring harness came and allowed better access to the A pillars making it easier to make more rust checks.
Inside the doors are clear of rust. The speaker panels are those I made 20 something years ago out of 4mm solid aluminium.
The front seats will have to be replaced as the foam is quite badly perished and has lost shape and form.
No rust around headlight areas. The badly shaped body filler in the centre of the apron top is the result of my bad repair after meeting the back of a HQ panel van in Bulleen Road......
I think I will have to repair the apron as finding another one in good condition will be difficult; they are very scarce.
With the heater box removed, I could get some access into the plenum chamber area. A little surface rust has begun but is easily stopped with convertor and etch primer.
I pulled out enormous handfulls of mulch from the chamber. Again, very lucky that rust had not begun given the wet dirt I found!
Wiring harnesses are out. Heater hose is bypassed from the manifold to water pump. I will still be able to start the engine to move the car around.
I did find some rust in the outer corners of each side of the front floor after some serious scraping with the screwdriver. A couple of very small holes that can be easily repaired with fibreglass after the rust has been neutralised.
I have sprayed rust convertor on the area for the time being.
