UK - 1972 Black Special
LISTED ON EBAY (UK) EARLY NOVEMBER 2006

Ford Capri MKI 1600 GT XLR (pre-facelift)

First registered August 1972, being one of the last MKI Capri’s before they were face-lifted in September 1972.

Original owner purchased the car as a retirement present to himself. Although black was never offered as a colour option on the MKI, this car was specially ordered and made by Ford Special Vehicle Division (plate under bonnet states “Capri Special” ) for him in black with the red interior. It may be the only MKI produced by Ford in this colour. Extras included the twin front lamps and opening rear windows.

The original owner used the car until he was in his eighties. The car then passed to his daughter who regularly drove it around the Ormskirk area. Speedo reading of 45,000miles is believed genuine. We got the car in 2005. There is some service history and old MOT’s along with the original owners pack including handbook.

Although rust was a serious problem in all Capri’s it seems that the original owners liberal use of waxoyl has paid dividends in protecting this one. Everything on this car is original (apart from the period mini-light wheels/the original roystyle wheels are with the car but need refurbishment). It has never had any welding and no body panels have been replaced. It was given a fresh coat of paint in December 2005. Some TLC is needed to the drivers seat and offside door card. The rest of the interior is pretty much as good as new. Carpets like new. All gauges and switches work fine. The original engine and gearbox is running strong and it is a first time starter. New radiator fitted this year.

Not intended to be a “show” car (although it knocks spots off many Capri’s I have seen displayed at shows) but a very tidy, amazingly rust free, reliable and useable 70’s classic. Probably the most original MK1 Capri available. MOT until July 2007 (which it flew through) and the road tax is of course free (Historic vehicle). Now, if only I could remember where I stored my white suit and Bee Gee’s albums.

I am more then happy for you to view the car, in fact would encourage it, it is stored in a well lit garage where you can come and look at every nook and cranny. This car is only for sale because I need the garage space pending a house move. My wife and I have had lots of fun with this car and it will be missed. Your chance to buy what may be the most original and possibly the only ‘factory’ black MK1 Capri ever made.
COMMENT MADE BY A SURFER:
Hi. Wonderful car!   For your information I can tell you that this Capri was a limited edition and I beleive only 250 were made in black, the other colour was emerald green.   Special bits added by Ford were side repeater lights hazard lights and black dashboard instead of wood.   You will also notice that your car has a power bulge which was also part of the special pack.   I already own a mark 1, not a special unfortuneatly, otherwise I would have bought this car immeadietly!   The only thing missing from your car are the 3 stripes down each side that follow the bonnet bulge. This car is rare. Hope all this helps

A: Thanks for the info, I had another message earlier suggesting the same as you. It did indeed have the triple stripes prior to the repaint. The stripes are still available, I just never got around to replacing them
