The rare Capri RS3100 made in 1973 by Ford UK Halewood plant with further enhancements by FAVO (Ford Advanced Vehicle Operations).
Only about 250 were made. A quantity of 50 or so were imported by Ford Australia after local manufacture of the Capri MK1 had ceased in Australia. If you would like to know more about the RS3100 Capri history, go back to my main page and click on the RS3100 and RS2600 website.
I bought the car in October of 1985 from a guy who turned up at my car audio workshop in Alphington to have a radio/cassette fitted to the RS Capri. As I was a Capri fan, I was very excited by this car as I had only ever seen these RS Capris from a distance. So I asked him if he was interested in selling the car to me; obviously he had just bought it himself, hence having the car audio fitted, and he said 'maybe, If I ever want to sell l'll let you know'. I was sure he was being polite... A week passed and he rang me to ask if I was still keen to buy it as he was denied insurance for the car. To say I was keen is an understatement :-)
By the way, the guy who sold me the car bought a 1977 Mazda 121 2.0L coupe. From fast to slow...
I actually sold the very 1600 GT you can see on the other pages of this site to bay this car.
I have kept the registration paid every year since 1986, through marriage, mortgage, babies and businesses.
It was the courting car.
Then the honeymoon car.
On occasion it carried babies :-0
The Capri has been very reliable for me. I have kept the oil changed regularly, started it and ran it warm often, even though some years to didn't move more than a few metres out of the garage!
I bought the car with 78,000 miles (126,000 Km) on the clock. It has now travelled 190,000 Km. Thats an average of 3,500 Km per year.
The only major repair was to the gearbox; the case hardening inside the 1st gear end of the cluster and layshaft wore through and became noisy. Sincere thanks to my friend Paul Rohr for helping me with the repair and to John Roberts, the 'Partsmeister' of the Capri Car Club of Victoria for providing the parts at a very reasonable price.
So what am I going to do with the car? It really needs a bare metal re-spray and some minor trim repairs to get it into immaculate shape to show; when I can afford it. The car has only been shunted once in the rear RH corner by a previous owner (not sure how many owners but I think 3 before myself - if anyone eading this knows, I'd be delighted to know!). I did drop a motorbike frame I was painting on the LHF wheel arch once :-((
I will keep taking the car to shows as I think it should be shown to those who are interested, and to support the Capri Club with some different metal.
Of course the other project will impinge a little on the RS; I hope it doesn't get jealous...
